Variety reports that War Dogs and The Hangover director Todd Phillips is in talks to co-write and direct a not-yet-named movie about one of Batman’s most infamous nemesis: The Joker.

The film will look at what it took for the Joker to become such a mastermind criminal and villain. Sources tell Variety that the film will take place in the 1980s and will have “have more of the look of a gritty crime drama than comic book movie.”

Martin Scorsese might have a role in the movie as well.

This would give the DC Comics studio the opportunity to expand the canon with “unique story angels” that are not currently in their cinematic world, writes Variety.

Scott Silver will be Phillips’ other co-writer. Phillips, who is represented by CAA, is better known for his comedies, but has been trying to jump into new genres of movies for a while now.
