We’ve been gently nudging our readers to embrace horticulture of late.

If you can’t raise a plant, how are you gonna raise a dog? Or, you, another human person?

Of course, that doesn’t mean we expect you to go full Mendel overnight (Read: Six Plants Even You Can’t Kill).

But should you want to grow something overnight — literally — try these self-sustaining glass lamp by German design house We Love Eames.

Their M.O.: to help plants grow in living spaces that have no windows or access to sunlight via an LED spotlight. Designers Emilia Lucht and Arne Sebrantke created two versions of the Mygdal Plantlight  — a pendant and a standing lamp — and have successfully grown plants in each of them.

Using patent-pending technology, the standing Mygdal’s conductive glass coating is able to stream electricity from its power cord to the LED, so there’s no reason to actually connect the light to an energy source. Once a plant is placed in one of the miniature ecosystems, it can grow undisturbed for years, according to the designers.

If only human persons could do the same.
