Unveiled in a study from the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, researchers have developed a new type of stretchable battery that doesn’t need to be charged. The key part of the technology is the thin, solar-powered battery cells that fit into a silicon case and are connected with copper-polymer joints. Basically, the battery is a delicate mesh that can bend up to 30 percent without losing functionality.
If perfected for mass production, this technology could have huge ramifications on the wearable technology industry. When integrated with processors and sensors into the design, the unit could become a self-powered and stretchable part of a smartwatch, for example. Watch the battery being tested in the video below.
