Japan has never wanted for carefully designed objects.

Chicago, on the other hand … well, we could use a little help.

And it comes in the form of Ukiyo Home, a new Chicago-based home goods outfit stocking all things beautiful and Japanese, now open online.

The name of the game here is handmade Japanese crafts. Think functional, minimalist niceties you’d be hard strung to find anywhere else.

Like the Readymade Weekender, a handy (but heavy and sturdy) cast-iron Dutch oven handmade in Fukuoka, Japan, that’ll look good perched on top of a grill or buried in a campfire.

And this Copper Terrarium from Terra Hydro, a stunningly simple vase designed so you can view your plant from root to flower.

Or the Futagami Bottle Opener, an elegant brass bottle opener from one of Japan’s oldest metal foundries. You could use more brass in your home, no matter how much is there already.

Look out for pop-ups in the future, but until then, you’ll have to keep updated with the stock over at the Ukiyo Home website.
