Car sharing has historically been a drab landscape. Super useful for certain. Just not all that jazzy.

Enter Mercedes.

Their newly launched Car2Go program uses an Airbnb-style model, wherein private car owners let their car out to strangers for cash. According to CEO Dieter Zetsche, the peer-to-peer program will run on a trial basis in San Francisco via existing company Getaround and select locations in Germany. Owners can select dates that their car will be made available, such as when they’re on holiday or out of town, and the vehicle will be suited with hardware that allows users to unlock and start the car via smartphone.

Cars can be booked from $5 per hour on up and come with insurance coverage and 24/7 roadside assistance. And participant’s driving records are screened to weed out any raging lunatics or knuckleheads who may have recently driven off the road coming out of a car wash.
