More than a decade ago, Shelby SuperCars usurped Bugati for the title of world’s fastest production car when they released the Ultimate Aero.
Unfortunately for Shelby SuperCars (now SSC North America), setting that record was basically their high-water mark. In 2010, Bugati’s Veyron Super Sport took back the title with a top speed of 267 MPH. The following year, SSC North America announced a successor to the Ultimate Aero, a new speed demon called the SSC Tuatara that was supposed to go on sale in 2013.
It never did.
Since then, SSC North America has been mired in the junkyard of obscurity. But earlier this week, SSC’s website showed signs of life with a teaser image hinting that a production version of the Tuatara — a car purported to boast a 0-60 time of 2.5 seconds and a 276-MPH top speed — could be on the way.
While that speed won’t be enough to get the company its record back (Koenigsegg’s Agera RS now has it at 277.9 MPH), it’s at least a step in the right direction for a marque that most had pegged as a goner.
