As we’ve seen, manufacturers are building drones to go where others fear to fly. When it comes to search and rescue, however, what good is a rescue drone without a nearby rescue team?
That’s what inspired Land Rover Special Vehicle Operations to design a custom 2017 Discovery that can handle tough terrain with one big feature: a roof-mounted drone that can take off and land while the vehicle is in motion.
Debuted at the Geneva Motor show, the venture — dubbed “Project Hero” — the custom Land Rover Discovery was engineered for use by the Austrian Red Cross to aid in search and rescue mission. The one-off SUV features a slide-out rear floor, extra equipment mounting points and LEDs to aid night vision.
“With the drone airborne, live footage can be transmitted to the Red Cross’s emergency response teams, helping them respond more quickly and effectively to landslides, earthquakes, floods and avalanches,” according to the designers. “The drone’s bird’s-eye view will allow rescuers to investigate an emergency scene from a safe distance.”
After testing, the killer combo will get to work this June at Red Cross training center in Erzberg.
