Human catapults: a breakthrough in energy-efficient travel? Probably not, but it’ll definitely get your heart pumping.
The latest thrill ride out of Queenstown, New Zealand (see skydiving, bungee-jumping, hobbits), the death trap is able to propel a human body from 0-60 in under two seconds, according to creative company AJ Hackett Bungy. But don’t worry, it’s not a complete free fall: the catapult uses bungee cords to make sure it’s not a one-way trip for any traveler crazy enough to try it.
In fact, the catapult closely resembles a bungee jump, the only difference being that it shoots riders 492 feet horizontally before dropping them down into the Nevis Valley, where they bounce for 3-4 more minutes, depending on velocity.
As expected, there are a few requirements before you can fling yourself into oblivion: all riders must be over the age of 13, weigh more than 60 pounds, pay $172 and of course sign the typical “if I die it’s not your fault” waivers.
It’s a worthwhile addition to your trip to Middle Earth, which should already be on your bucket list.
