How to Spend a Perfect Weekend in Vienna

"Despite its reputation for music, world-class architecture and old-world charm, Vienna hasn’t enjoyed the same reputation for food and nightlife as cities like Paris, Barcelona and London," travel writer Kevin Gray notes. Due, though, to an uptick in new restaurants and bars that are "woven seamlessly into the Viennese fabric," as he puts it, that's all about to change.

After spending a few days in Austria's capital city, Gray reflects on his stay. The resulting guide is meant to help you maximize your time on the ground in Vienna, from where to eat and stay, to, of course, play. Visits to Schönbrunn Palace and St. Stephen’s Cathedral are on the docket, sure, but there's so much more to this gorgeous European city. Read more to find out exactly what.

Located in the heart of the Financial District, Millennium Downtown New York offers unobstructed views of Lower Manhattan and unparalleled access to some of New York's most iconic landmarks — The Oculus and One World Observatory chief among them. After a day of sightseeing, the hotel lobby bar Liquid Assets is the perfect place to retire to for a cocktail.

Superdawg in Chicago: If there's one city that can rightfully be called the hot dog capital of America, it's Chicago, and there's no better place to pick up a dog in the Windy City than the historic Superdawg, a drive-in opened by high school sweethearts Maurie and Flaurie Berman back in 1948. Their eponymous hot dog strays ever-so slightly from the classic Chicago-style toppings (mustard, relish, onion, sport peppers, tomato, a pickle spear and celery salt), swapping out the more traditional red tomato slices for a pickled green tomato on the side instead, but it's still beloved by locals.

Thanks to its rich history, colorful architecture and an illustrious food scene, Lisbon is an easy place to love. In fact, in 2017 CNN anointed it "the coolest capital in Europe." A lot has changed since then, but the Portuguese port city remains as enamoring as ever. Think castles, beaches and renowned cocktail bars (lookin' at you, Monkey Mash). That'll be a whole lot of yes from us. Below, a few resources to help you plan your next trip.

Your Lisbon Checklist

  • Enjoy a tipple at Toca da Reposa, a dimly lit but charming speakeasy where sustainability and local ingredients take precedence in the drinks, which are all delicious and named after animals (e.g. Beaver: whisky, eucalyptus wood, sage, butter).
  • You'd be forgiven for thinking that the National Tile Museum wasn't an imperative agenda item, but you'd be wrong. As our correspondent Elyssa Goodman puts it, "It's a stunner."
  • Grab a bite at Pastéis de Belém, known for Portugal’s most famous pastries — pastéis de nata.

Roseland Theater in Portland, OR: When it comes to venues, smaller is obviously better, but somehow Roseland Theater in Portland makes a 1,410 capacity feel intimate. Even the balcony offers a great view and stadium seating for tired feet.
