Owning a home is the bedrock upon which the American Dream was built.

It’s also a bill-generating money pit.

Which is why owning the smartest, most efficient house on the market should be of interest to you.

Palo Alto startup Acre Designs makes that home. But there are only 12 left.

Acre is the brainchild of husband-and-wife team Andrew (an industrial designer) and Jennifer (an architect) Dickson. Their aim: a hyper-efficient house that won’t cost you a dime in energy bills.

How do they do it? By making resource-saving materials (like an airtight building shell, automated LED lighting, etc.) and technologies (like the Tesla Powerwall) a standard feature.

Any shortfall is covered by a solar-panel system.

The savings? They peg it at over $300,000. You can even go totally off-grid with some extra consultation. If it means never getting another PG&E bill, we’re into it.

All you need is a plot of land and around $400,000 for a 1,200-square-foot two-bedroom unit.

But they’re only taking 12 more reservations this year — so if you want one, now’s your chance.
