Depp Charge

A first-ever pirate musical on New York Harbor

  • 23 July 2012

Every young boy's dreamed of becoming a pirate — sadly, the closest you get these days is the movie theater and watching that animatronic puppet, Johnny Depp.

Well sharpen yer cutlass, scallywag, and bring your family to the Clipper City Tall Ship’s “Pirates on Board … The Magical History Tour”, a first-ever interactive musical taking place on Manhattan’s waters three nights this week.

An “off Broadway, on the water” piece directed by an Atlantic Theater vet and recent Sam Mendes collaborator, “Pirates on Board” recounts infamous events in New York history — Alexander Hamilton’s fatal duel, John Roebling’s construction of the Brooklyn Bridge, etc. — while cruising past the actual locations where they took place.

The play’s run by the raffish thespians of Floating Theater NYC who, as the pirate gang of Sadie the Goat, take command of the the hulking, 158-foot Clipper City and lead it on a “time-traveling journey” from the South Street Seaport around the sights of New York Harbor.

The cruise is just under two hours, there's a cash bar on board and, since the show's interactive, audience members may be called on to act as pirates.

Which is a dream come true. Argh-uably.
