Well, humanity, it’s been fun. Our artificially intelligent overlords would like to thank you for your service … and show you out.
In the recent paper “When Will AI Exceed Human Performance?”, Katja Grace from the Future of Humanity Institute at the University of Oxford surveyed 352 leaders in artificial intelligence research and asked them when intelligent machines would outperform humans (and provide cheaper labor) in various tasks.
The results? Translators and retail salespeople should be worried, as their gigs should become automated within 7-15 years. AI researchers, on the other hand? They’ve got a lifetime (80-90 years). Full automation of labor should happen in about 120 years.
More fun facts: by 2026, AI will be writing high-school essays. The self-driving truck revolution should happen the following year, and the first AI best-seller will hit the shelves in 2049.
Not worried about something happening for another century? Researchers believe there’s actually a 50-50 chance AI will outperform humans in all tasks in just 45 years.
