Little known fact: when George Carlin was coming up with his list of the seven dirty words you can never say on television, he almost added an eighth:

Audit.*

There are few words in the English language that inspire cold sweats faster, but if the IRS does ask you to open up the books, you’re going to want to be prepared.

To figure out the exact likelihood of having your number pulled, use this handy chart. Basically, if you make $1-$199,999 annually, the chances of having your card pulled are less than 1%. Beyond that number, they go up. Dramatically.

If you do get the call, stay organized, think about hiring a pro and don’t piss off the auditor.
