Virtual reality has long since arrived in the mainstream.
Next stop? Your pocket.
First there was Google Cardboard, a collapsible VR device for your smartphone made out of ... heavy duty paper.
Amazing, sure, but for $99, we'd rather pass on a device that falls apart in a rainstorm.
The new Figment VR, currently in fundraising mode via Kickstarter, mends that error. The device, which doubles as a phone case, is durable and practical, striking a sweet spot in the market between Google Cardboard and its super luxe competitor, Oculus Rift, which is rather more cumbersome.
The Figment VR case packs two VR-app-ready lenses into a streamlined design that affixes to your iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus, iPhone 6S or iPhone 6S Plus. Android on the way.
An intuitive sliding mechanism extends the lens from the back of the case and folds back easily once you’re done, say, flying down the highway in a Porsche.
With many more an adventure in store, the Figment VR is compatible with any Google Cardboard app, as well as others such as Jaunt VR, VRSE and 360-degree videos on Facebook and YouTube.
At $49, it's just $10 more than a typical phone case, and allows you to climb Mt. Everest, have a seat at a Dodgers v. Mets game or fly to Mars at the flip of a switch.
