Welcome to Tock of the Town, a biweekly guide to timepieces for all styles and budgets.
What time is it? It’s actually WatchTime, the annual luxury watch show in New York and the largest public watch event in the U.S. You can get highlights here ... Ralph Lauren is launching a Polar Bear watch collection, in honor of the brand’s mascot ... Buy this Kickstarter watch, fund a build of an HB Coupe ... If you’re buying or selling a luxury watch, there’s a new platform that seems pretty trustworthy.
What’s making us tick ...
Budget watch (<$200): Skagen Aaren Kulør
Named for the Danish word meaning to add color and fun, these lively, sub-$100 timepieces are inspired by the brightly-colored townhouses of Copenhagen’s Nyhavn district. You can change the silicone straps for something a bit more standard or contrasting. ($95)
Affordable style (<$1000): TACS Natorenzu
This funky Japanese brand (pronounced “tax”) combines the looks of a vintage camera into a minimalist timepiece. The dial resembles a focus ring, and the watch glass is convex like a fisheye lens. ($450)
Just take all my money (>$1000): Bremont Supersonic
Celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Concorde — godspeed on your eventual, quieter return — the Supersonic incorporates parts of the iconic airliner. That’s both in spirit (the sunburst white dial represents the Concorde’s unique reflective paint, the blue hands evoke the British Airways color palette and the plane’s silhouette can be seen on the second-hand sub-dial) and literally, as actual metal from the Alpha Bravo 1974 Concorde was used in the making of this limited-edition ticker. Only 500 of these pieces will be made. (Starting from $12,495)
See you in two weeks. You probably missed the Gorillaz/G-Shock limited-edition timepiece collab that dropped this week — it sold out in what seemed like minutes — but you can sign up to be notified when more come in stock. Until then, a little blast from the past from our favorite anime rockers.
