Swearing While You Exercise Makes You Stronger, Says Science

Do you even curse, bro?

It might not help build your vocabulary, but swearing aloud actually makes you stronger.

In a follow-up study to previous research showing a correlation between pain reduction and swearing, Dr. Richard Stephens of Keele University and his team used both an exercise bike and a handgrip test to see if there was a connection between increased strength and profanity. The study’s participants underwent each test twice: once incanting a neutral word, and once using their favorite swear word. Both tests concluded that with swearing, participants showed increased strength.

Why? Who the f*ck knows. “Why it is that swearing has these effects on strength and pain tolerance remains to be discovered,” said Dr. Stephens.
