The 8 Best Deals on Winter (Yes, Winter) Gear Right Now

Winter isn't coming, and that's the point

April 19, 2018 9:00 am

Normally, thinking about winter in April is counterintuitive.

But given unseasonably cool temps all over the country, you’re probably yet to box up those coats and stash them in the attic.

Our advice: Wait a few more days.

Because now is actually the best time to stock up on cold weather gear, from down jackets to wool beanies to waterproof boots.

Herein, eight stores currently offering ridiculous off-season winter gear sales — i.e., savings up to 75%.

Spring
You could spend literally days here rifling through the sales section (10,000 items+), but we say start with hats — a nice, curated selection of beanies and wool caps are half off.
Best bet: The wool/cashmere Ribbed Hat by FRYE (50% off) has been sitting comfortably on my head this week. If you’re going a bit more upscale, the cashmere option is $30 off.

Patagonia
It’s up to 50% off past-season products, including beanies, outer layers, snow pants and more.
Best bet: The windproof Down Sweater Jacket, an online exclusive, features a 100% recycled polyester ripstop shell with 800-fill-power traceable goose down, handwarmer pockets, nylon-bound cuffs and a zipper garage at the chin. Keeps you toasty at 50% off.

Todd Snyder
Right now you can save literally hundreds of dollars on an array of good-looking down jackets, hooded parkas and officer’s coats.
Best bet: The Black Pinstripe Topcoat is a classic wool layer that hits below the knee, and it’s $400 off.

Huckberry
Plenty of rakish winter jackets, hoodies and sweaters are half off, but we’re really here for the footwear.
Best bet: Waterproof boots from Hood Rubber Co. are now 50% off. We particularly like the Concord, a mountaineering boot/sneaker hybrid with an Italian wool collar that’s decidedly comfy. (Another option: Nordstrom Rack has up to 75% off a good selection of Palladium boots.)

Backcountry
Of course Backcountry’s got deals on cool-weather duds this time of year, from all your favorite brands (The North Face, Columbia, Patagonia, etc.). This is more heavy-duty gear, though.
Best bet: Gloves and mittens, some over half off. The Dakine Maverick is your waterproof yet breathable Gore-Tex hand warmer for snowboarding days (and 40% off), but there’s a ton of variety here: The North Face, Burton, Hestra, etc. (And if you’re more of a winter urban dweller, Bespoke Post has some cashmere and options on sale.)

J.Crew
You can get an additional 30% off sale styles right now with the code SHOPNOW, which gets you ridiculous deals on cold-weather workout gear, gloves, sweaters and insulated topcoats.
Best bet: The handsome plaid Abraham Moon lambswool scarves are more than half off after discounts and codes.

Nordstrom
Nothing specifically wintry, but hundreds of cold-weather items have new markdowns of 25-40% off, including fleeces, quilted jackets and sweaters.
Best bet: The ‘Aconcagua’ Goose Down Vest from The North Face. Water-repellent, insulated panels on the side and shoulders, and good for layering. Also 40% off.

Brooks Brothers
The fall and winter sale here features cardigans, wool socks, topcoats, half-zip sweaters and flannel PJs at up to 50% off.
Best bet: The Donegal Crewneck Sweater should go with pretty much anything in your wardrobe, and two-ply donegal yarn (spun in Italy) adds some nice texture. Also, it’s half off.
