Tepui’s Best Rooftop Tent to Date Is Also a Savvy Cargo Unit

For dropping camp whenever, wherever

Camping at the drop of a hat? That’s a power usually reserved for Bear Grylls.

But Tepui Tents makes it a reality for the rest of us.

The Santa Cruz-based brand just launched the new HyBox Tent for preorder ahead of the holidays. It’s essentially a car-top storage unit that can also pop up into a tent, and it’s just the clever addition you need to adventurize your weekends.

If Tepui sounds familiar, we’ve written about them before. We even tested one of their models out for a couple nights in Joshua Tree. That model, the Baja Ayer, was sturdy, sat secure atop the car and came with a memory foam matress. Only problem? We had to provide the roof rack (a Yakima) and assembly wasn’t the most intuitive/proved time-consuming.

The new model goes a long way towards addressing these issues. The hardshell cargo box only has to be affixed to your car once; stuff it with whatever you need to transport, whether you’re headed out for an overnight or just the afternoon. Once you’re in need of sleeping quarters, just pull the zipper on the cotton-polyester canopy and whipe that baby out.

While it won’t be the first choice for folks who like to leave the car behind and hike to different campsites, it is a great way to sleep off the ground, without too much setup, for a tiny fraction of the small fortunes your friends spend on teardrops or tiny homes.
