If ‘Peace and Quiet’ Were a Place, It Would Be This Sri Lankan Tropical Retreat

An infinity pool ‘Cannonball!’ or two excepted

Serenity, while a scarce resource, is not an expensive one. You can find it anywhere.

It’s in the pages of a good book; it whistles through the park on a Saturday afternoon; it attends waterways and hiking trails and two-lane blacktop.

Having said that, it is occasionally worth it to shell out for some big-league peace and quiet. Case in point: the Sri Lankan Tropical Retreat.

Located in Hemmathagama, a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it village in the center of the densely green island nation, the retreat looks like a cabana bar teamed up with a yoga studio. The property, which is listed through Airbnb, includes a vegetation-draped veranda beside a placid infinity pool, mango-wood floors under an iluk-thatched roof and five rooms with four-poster beds.

Wifi’s sparse, and that’s good. Grab one of their bikes and head to the village for lunch (20 minutes away). Or hike Bible Rock, a flat-top mountain nearby.
