Oregon’s New Timber Trail Is a 670-Mile Bike Path Through Paradise

Expect wildlife, lakeside camps and even a couple ghost towns

You should have just enough room in your summer for one more big adventure. And we found it: Oregon’s new Timber Trail.

According to the people behind the trail’s development, it’s “an iconic 668-mile backcountry mountain bike route spanning Oregon’s diverse landscapes from the California border to the Columbia River Gorge.” It’s 51 percent singletrack, and almost entirely unpaved. The trail “begins” just inside Oregon’s southern border with California, near Lakeview; along the way, you’ll pass alpine meadows, lakeside camps and ghost towns.

Sound like heaven? Yep.

A note for fans of indoor cycling and Spin studios: this probably isn’t for you, unless you’re ready to spend a few weeks in the mud. The trail’s still under development: “If you’re looking for a rugged, primitive experience this may be it,” its founders suggest. We say better to get there now, before greater refinements lead to greater popularity. You can begin by taking a short survey (on their site), which unlocks a downloadable map, “full route guide GPS” and “trail news.”

Get rolling.
