We’re all adults here, and as such are responsible for keeping ourselves on track. The days of parents and teachers looking over your shoulder making sure you’re focusing on work are long gone. Wait, now they’re back — in headphone form.
A new Kickstarter campaign offers up Mindset, a set of smart headphones that "improve your concentration” by reading your brain activity with five electroencephalography (EEG) sensors. If they sense you getting distracted, an audio cue will sound letting you know you should get back to work.
The campaign video starts by referencing “the flow state,” which is a psychological term for a mental state in which you’re fully immersed in and enjoying your task. Happens to all of us during particularly inspiring days at our jobs. Later, the voiceover announces, “Each time you use it, you’re learning to better recognize and ignore distractions. Over time, you can experience deeper concentration and enter the flow state at will — with or without Mindset.”
Is that you, Morpheus?
As with any Kickstarter project, it’s tough to tell whether or not the final product will live up to the inspirational short film. And with Mindset, the creators say engineering validation and audio tests will take place after the crowdfunding.
But if this piques your interest (perhaps because you're reading this article instead of working) you can pledge $229-$249 for one until April 5th, with an estimated delivery of December 2017.
In the meantime, back to work.
