An Ancient Island Is Getting This Sci-Fi Summer Home

On the cliffs of Corfu, a vision of future living arises

Few islands speak to the faded majesty of ancient civilization like Corfu, the Greek island in the Ionian Sea — once briefly home to the shipwrecked Odysseus.

Today, the island is one of Greece’s most popular with tourists, famous for its blue sea, rugged interior landscapes, and millenia-old ruins, like the Byzantine castle of Kassiopi

All this makes it a curious place — and striking counterpoint to the proposed modern design of the Midnight Stars house by 314 Architecture Studio, which reworks timeless motifs (see: the arched facade) with ultra-modern finishes — all united by plaster work in white, the official color of the Greek islands.

The residence is comprised of two stacked volumes set on a cliffside, with the same sort of streamlined passage between outdoor and indoor living space as you’d see in the similar climates of southern California.

The only significant deviation in color? Interior wooden slats in medium brown, a reference to the island’s pine trees. There are killer views, too — but in some ways they point to the one thing the house doesn’t have: a pool.

But things, y’know, could be worse.
