Michael Phelps’ aquatic achievements are outstanding, but there’s another American hero whose recent underwater exploits deserve recognition — and his name is David Phung.

Working with a team of rescuers outside of Baton Rouge in Louisiana, Phung was able to save a woman and her dog after they became trapped inside her small convertible by a flash flood.

During the dramatic rescue footage — which was captured on video by WAFB — the woman yells “Oh my god, I’m drowning” as her vehicle is being sucked underneath the rushing waters.

Phung then leaps into the water, pries open the top of the car and pulls the woman to the surface. When the woman screams about her dog, Phung tries to find it … and succeeds.

Phelps might be getting the headlines, but Phung gets our vote for MVP of the weekend.
