And that mouth, hopefully, will be sipping on some fantastic and extremely rare Japanese whisky.
Rare Japanese spirits retailer dekantā just announced the details behind the Karuizawa Cities of Japan 35 Year Old. It’s a limited release of 150 bottles of single Sherry cask Japanese whisky from the revered but shuttered distillery Karuizawa.
Located at the foothills of the active Mount Asama volcano, Karuizawa both the smallest and most elevated (850m above sea level) distillery in Japan before it closed in 2000. Predating the modern whisky boom, single cask bottlings from Karuizawa today fetch upwards of $128,000 during auctions.
The liquid for the Cities of Japan bottles is aged for thirty-plus years in a first-fill sherry cask. You’ll discover liquorice, coffee, cinnamon, ginger and clove on the nose, with dark chocolate, umani and “succulent forest fruit” on the palate.
While the whisky is the same throughout, it’s housed in six different bottle designs inspired by Japan’s “most vibrant” cities.
A raffle for interested buyers is open until 7pm Wednesday. If chosen, a bottle will set you back $12,500.
