Japan Airlines (JAL) announced today that it is planning a low-cost airline for medium- and long-haul flights to meet the area’s rising demands for budget travel.

With a plan to invest as much as $183M USD in the launch, Japanese officials are expecting the service to complement the country’s impressive domestic network, in that more international travelers will take the opportunity for a lower-ticket price to visit, and will then use the local infrastructure for regional travel.

So far no name has been announced, but we do know that Tokyo’s Narita Airport will be the base for flights operating to the Americas, Asia and Europe. And the expected launch is 2020 — which will be just in time for the Tokyo Summer Olympics.
