Whether it’s by car, subway or shoe leather express, there’s a good chance your daily commute involves checking traffic, playing music or swiping left and right on a smart device.
To help you easily engage in all those activities (and look sharp while doing so), Google and Levi’s have teamed up to create a new kind of wearable that makes it simple to control your digital life.
First unveiled last year as a concept, the Levi’s Commuter Trucker Jacket is loaded up with tech and features developed by Google’s Advanced Technology and Projects group. The most important of these are Jacquard Threads, which offer gesture-sensing sensors that allow the garment wearer to access and control connected devices by swiping or tapping the jacket’s sleeve.
Compatible with iOS or Android devices, the electronic components are embedded into flexible tags that rest in the jacket’s cuff and can be removed for washing.
Also, thanks to a Jacquard app that pairs with the sensors in the jacket, the gestures are fully customizable and can be re-configured as needed over time. “We’re excited for Jacquard to be out in the world, and look forward to seeing how connectivity and interactivity can dress up the rest of your closet,” according to Google.
Available in select shops starting on Wednesday, the $350 jacket launches online next week.
