Trailers get a bad rep. Meth will do that.

But the travel trailers of yore — all chrome and sleek-lined, burnished to a futuristic shine — were a symbol of freedom and the open road. A little bit of blacktop luxury.

Rediscover that hopeful American spirit, while enjoying a little peace and quiet, at El Cosmico, the Texas luxury trailer lodge, now taking reservations.

Abutting the small ranching/artist community of Marfa, El Cosmico is a trailer-themed resort chockablock with restored caravans, made by the likes of Vagabond, Spartan, and Branstrator in the early ’50s.

They’ve each been refurbished with varnished birch interiors, West Texas decor, private kitchens and baths (including some outdoor tubs/showers), and outdoor cedar decks.

But don’t expect TVs, phones, or wi-fi. El Cosmico operates under a “mañanifesto,” a.k.a. the idea that “it might happen today, and it might just as likely not, and really either way it’s not that big of a deal.”

Instead: there’s an elm grove of hammocks. At night, when the temperatures swing down to the 30s, cozy up to a campfire or soak in a Dutch wood-fired hot tub.

Sometimes the old ways have their perks.
