It might not be quite as dark as Westworld, but a new Western short from a pair of Pixar vets delivers a glimpse of what would happen if the Disney subsidiary stopped being polite and started getting real.
A side project from animators Lou Hamou-Lhadj and Andrew Coats, Borrowed Time tells the story of a “weathered Sheriff returning to the remains of an accident he has spent a lifetime trying to forget.” Full of tension and moody music from Academy Award winner Gustavo Santaolalla, the vignette shows the potential for what an adult-oriented Pixar film might look like.
“A goal for us was to make something that kind of contested the notion of animation being a genre, and one for children specifically,” Hamou-Lhadj said in a video explaining the project.
He failed to explain what to do about the sense of existential dread the short will likely leave you with, however.
