Two-Door Range Rovers Are Back, Just Like the Good Ol’ Days

Unlike the good ol’ days, this'll cost you an arm and a leg

The most common gripes about modern cars can generally be put down to curmudgeonly nostalgia (“Back in my day…”). But for the average driver — pipe down, Bronco diehards — vehicles have been on a steady climb towards welcome convenience for decades.

That said, there are a few gripes we’ll happily indulge, including the two-door Range Rover. From the time the British SUV debuted in 1970 until 1981, it was only available in a two-door configuration (or three-door, if we’re being kosher). It even appeared in an exhibition at the Louvre in that form. But as SUVs grew bigger and bigger, Range Rover’s smaller options dwindled.

Enter automotive designer Niels van Roij, and a new build he’s calling the Adventum SUV Coupe. You’ll know him from that seductive Tesla shooting brake, and here he’s similarly custom-building a car that he thinks is missing from the market. Back in 2018, Jaguar Land Rover announced a new, limited-edition two-door Range Rover Coupe, then canceled it. So Van Roij is doing it himself.

According to the website, the Adventum SUV takes the current flagship model (“which was never produced as a 2-door, up until now”) and adds hand-finished bespoke aluminum bodywork along with an interior decked out however the customer sees fit.

“Anything is possible, from highly-polished woods, personalised tread plates, extraordinary one-off colour-coded leather hides in chic patterns to sophisticated handcrafted embroidery,” says Van Roij. “Even Tweeds and exotic materials not normally found in the realm of automotive design can be applied by our team of craftspeople.”

The first model is undergoing surgery as we speak, which means only 99 more production slots are available at the time of writing. But with a base price around $373K, you probably have some time to think about it before they’re all spoken for.
