Newest evidence of that fact? At this weekend’s Woodward Dream Cruise, Dodge will unveil the 2017 Challenger T/A and Charger Daytona, revivals of a pair of muscle-era classics. Originally built as performance racers in the late '60s and early '70s, the Challenger and Charger hit the production line when race organizers began to require companies to manufacture a set number of models prior to receiving competition certification. The original T/A (Trans Am), for example, was built for the SCCA Trans Am, and the OG Charger for NASCAR tracks.
The new versions will be toned down, with subtle performance upgrades and some aesthetic tweaks. The Daytona won’t carry that huge rear spoiler, but it will still sport retro graphics and upgrades like a cold-air intake, upgraded brakes and a performance exhaust. The Challenger’s upgrades include a sportier suspension, performance exhaust and a trick air-intake system borrowed from the Hellcat. And both new builds will be available in a 5.7-liter HEMI V8 with 375 HP and 410 lb-ft of torque or a 6.4-liter HEMI with 485 HP and 475 lb-ft of torque.
Orders for the Charger begin this September, with the Challenger set to follow in October, with prices in the $40k-$46k range — more or less on the low end of what one would pay for an original.
