A Town That Once Hosted Hollywood Westerns Is on Sale for $1.5M

Think of it as your own private ‘Westworld’

Fans of Westworld rejoice:

You may soon be able to establish your own hedonistic, cyborgian theme park in the Wild West … by buying an entire town that once played backdrop to Hollywood western films

Stargazing Desert Retreat, formerly Big Horn Ranch (and before that a big old plot of sand) is a defunct western movie set just outside of Pioneertown, California (itself a defunct western movie set). Erected in the mid-20th century as phony main streets for films, Big Horn and Pioneertown have seen their share of rolling tumbleweeds and high-noon shootouts. And now you’ve got the chance to sheriff your own frontier town.

Selling for a shade under $1.5M, the listing includes a 3,000-square foot main house with a master suite, two new casitas, four bathrooms and a new dining room. The interior design leans a bit more nuanced than parlor-fight chic, thankfully, and continues into a train caboose with its own guest room. While the general store, barbershop, church and jail are just facades, the saloon is very real and can host up to 80 people. Bonus? The whole compound is just 20 minutes from Joshua Tree and 40 minutes from Palm Springs.

For more information on the listing, head here. And if you’re not feeling prepared to make an offer, the ranch is still renting out on Airbnb before it’s sold. Book a couple nights and go get a feel for the place.
