This is Estate of Play, a monthly rundown (with pictures!) of seven of the most architecturally significant properties currently for sale in Los Angeles.

400 Castle Place
Beverly Hills
Price: $13,000,000

Robert Skinner designed this mid-century masterpiece in 1962, and the appliances were recently updated while keeping with the minimalist aesthetic. It’s on a quiet cul-de-sac in Trousdale Estates.

9038 Wonderland Park Avenue
Los Angeles
Price: $4,500,000

Pierre Koenig’s Case Study #21 is one of the most famous houses in Los Angeles, and widely considered a seminal modernist single home design. In 1997, Koenig was hired to restore the steel frame home, and gave its surrounding fountains and pools some love, too.

455 Lorraine
Hancock Park
Price: $10,000,000

Many believe that L.A. doesn’t have the sort of blue-blooded royalty the East Coast does, but it very much did, and the Chandler family sat at the helm for a while. The Dorothy Chandler Estate was one of the family’s many holdings, and one of the few landmarks in L.A. to house several U. S. Presidents, including Eisenhower, Kennedy, Johnson and Nixon. Its American Beaux Arts architecture and central location is acknowledged as a historic cultural monument, and it’s been completely updated in recent years, including the addition of a ton of solar panels.

3640 Noranda Lane
Malibu
Price: $10,000,000

Most people drive up to to Malibu to hike the hills and to seek solitude. This John Lautner-designed abode offers all of that nature within its 24 acres and includes interlinked ponds, waterfalls and ocean views. Oh yeah, and a vineyard. This is basically the Monticello of Malibu.

Listing: Chris Cortazzo, Coldwell Banker

1001 North Crescent Drive
Beverly Hills
Price: $27,000,000

We were pretty surprised to learn that this traditional format home was previously owned by Ozzy and Sharon Osbourne. It’s secluded and stately, and not anything like what you’d imagine a heavy metal icon returning home to.

Listing: Lori Hashman Berris, Sotheby’s International Realty

Le Belvédére
Bel Air
Price: $85,000,000

You could hold a banquet for 250 people in Le Belvédére’s banquet hall and there would still be plenty of room. There’s also a 20-car garage and a 36-foot handcarved Jerusalem stone wall surrounding the property. The infinity pool is 70 feet long. It sits on 2.2 acres of land and has 48,000 square feet of living space, which is basically the size of a Home Depot.

2255 Verde Oak Drive
Los Feliz
Price: $4,300,000

This Frank Lloyd Wright-designed home, nestled in the hills of Los Feliz, is on the National Historic Register. Its Mayan Art Deco design has been updated, and there’s a geometric pool recessed below the three bedrooms. Feels like you’re walking through a comfy, boutique art museum.
