For Sale: The Hollywood Hacienda That Once Housed James Dean

He didn't own it. But he was the on-site handyman.

If your home has a good enough backstory, people will listen to it as often as you’re willing to tell it.

There’s room for subjectivity, of course. But as long as it’s more “Marlon Brando had a heart attack in this pool” than “Seth Green brushed his teeth in that bathroom,” you’re probably good.

On the correct end of that spectrum, and with a special twist: this $4M hacienda stunner in Hollywood Hills, which hosted a handyman and aspiring actor by the name of James Dean in the early ’50.

That’s right. While Dean didn’t own the place, he did occupy the guest suite while working as a catch-all choresman for Warner Brothers executive Hal B. Willis, according to Uncrate. And in a way, that’s an even better story. Pedigreed Hollywood homes get flipped all the time, but it’s rare to find a home that knew a superstar at the beginning of his or her career — which might be why the price tag on this home is a relative steal.

As for the tangible appointments of the villa, expect three beds, four baths and an interior that plays off California’s classic Mission style without going too Curb Your Enthusiasm-chic. Plus, you’ll find a renovation that honors the home’s original 1927 draws (fireplace, exposed beams) while ushering in more light and offering views toward the hills and pool outside.
