What does it mean for a luxury brand to reinvent a car? That depends on how you want to answer that question. Bugatti, for instance, has collaborated with Hermès on the Veyron Fbg par Hermès — a sleek, imposing car that exists in very rare quantities. (Bugatti’s website mentions that only 4 were initially made.) What happens, though, if you like the idea of Hermès reimagining a car, but you’re looking for something utterly singular?

Turns out there’s an answer to that question, too. At Robb Report, Janice O’Leary explored exactly what Hermès Sur-Mesure is capable of when it comes to the automotive space. Hermès Sur-Mesure is the luxury brand’s bespoke service, capable of both transforming an existing object and creating something entirely new.

The article explores what the bespoke service did when tasked with transforming a McLaren Speedtail. In this case, the scope of the project shifted; originally, the plan was to paint the Speedtail in Hermès’s signature orange.

Once the design and engineering director of Hermès Sur-Mesure saw the car, however, he suggested a different plan to the client — one which involved changes to the interior and an abundance of distinctive leather throughout the car. As O’Leary notes, this makes an already distinctive car even more unique; a hypercar that’s leveled up.

The whole process sounds fascinating, and the results look dynamic as well. It’s an intriguing window into what this bespoke program is capable of.
