The Golden Globes have announced the host for next year’s ceremony — though as it turns out, hosts would be more accurate. The duo of Tina Fey and Amy Poehler will return for the 2021 ceremony, reprising their three-year run guiding the awards show from 2013 to 2015. Variety reports that the announcement came from NBC at this year’s Television Critics Association press tour.
The duo, frequent collaborators, have worked together on a number of projects since then — including winning an Emmy in 2016 for their work co-hosting an episode of Saturday Night Live. More recently, Fey co-starred in the Poehler-directed comedy Wine Country, which debuted on Netflix in 2019.
In a review of the 2015 Golden Globes for The Guardian, Hadley Freeman hailed Fey and Poehler for turning the awards show into “a feminist awards ceremony.” Freeman neatly explained the duo’s skill at co-hosting:
The great irony about Fey and Poehler is that, while they are generally lauded as being the most likable people in show business, they aren’t always all that nice.
That blend of amicability with a willingness to skewer big names exists as a sharp contrast to, well, certain other big names who have hosted the ceremony recently.
Both Fey and Poehler have ongoing projects at NBC in addition to the hosting gig: Poehler as co-host of Making It and Fey as co-creator of a forthcoming comedy starring Ted Danson as the mayor of Los Angeles. Fans of sharp comedy have plenty to look forward to.
