No, you didn’t miss Season 3 — that’s in the works as well

Fans of Donald Glover and quality television, this week brings with it good news: FX has renewed Atlanta for a fourth season. Atlanta’s third season has not yet gone into production. Man of Many reports that “both the previously announced season three (announced in June 2018) and season four will go into production right away, each with eight episodes.”

This makes it very likely that Atlanta will add to its already-impressive array of awards won. That’s included Golden Globes in 2017 for the show itself and for Glover, its creator and star; it’s also won 5 Emmys and been nominated for 22

And given that Glover, Brian Tyree Henry, Lakeith Stanfield and Zazie Beetz have each been cast in numerous high-profile films since Atlanta’s first season — including this writer’s two favorite films of 2018, Widows and Sorry to Bother You — getting two seasons ready to go at the same time seems like a wise logistical move.

The Hollywood Reporter’s report on the renewal suggests that viewers won’t need to schedule their Atlanta Season 3 premiere parties quite yet: “A premiere time frame for seasons three and four has not yet been determined.”

Glover and his collaborators have set a remarkably high bar with the first two seasons of the show — but given the talent involved, the question of how they’ll chart new territory is an exciting one to consider.
