Even when the Cincinnati Reds, who are one of the worst clubs in Major League Baseball and may be one of the worst professional teams of all-time game, are winning, they can’t help from coming up on the wrong side of history.
Dismantling the Cubs during a 20-5 win over Chicago on Thursday, the Reds — who were on the right side of a no-hitter earlier this season but somehow still lost the game — got to face shortstop Andrelton Simmons on the mound in the eighth inning of the blowout.
Simmons, who has been clocked throwing 94 mph from his natural position, opted to throw breaking balls against Cincy and pitched as slowly as 39 mph. Rocked to the tune of five runs on five hits and one walk, Simmons had one bright spot during his inning of work when he made history with a pitch to Kyle Farmer that hit just below 45 mph on the radar gun. Swung at and missed by Farmers, the 44.9 mph “slider” was the slowest pitch to draw a swinging strike in baseball history.
The swinging strike was the only one that Simmons recorded during the inning. Farmer ultimately ended up getting the last laugh and singling two pitches later on a 47 mph pitch.
