On Monday morning the Washington Redskins announced the 87-year-old name of the franchise is going to be changed.

In an official statement that used the term Redskins three times and also came from a Twitter account that is still called Washington Redskins, the franchise announced it will be retiring its name and logo upon completion of a review that began on July 3.

As for what the name will actually be changed to, that hasn’t been decided.

It’s believed that the team will avoid any sort of reference to Native Americans or Native American culture, but that Washington will retain the franchise’s burgundy and gold color scheme. Head coach Ron Rivera has also said the team wanted to include the military in its new name.

Kidding aside, while names like the Sentinels, Generals and Renegades have all been floated, naming the team the Redwolves has started to gain momentum.

A poll on Twitter overwhelmingly showed Redwolves as a fan favorite and the name has also gained support from current and former players.

With NFL training camps scheduled to start at the end of the month, expect the new name, whatever it is, to be announced in the coming weeks once trademarking details are ironed out.

In related news, the Cleveland Indians are considering changing their name while the Atlanta Braves and Chicago Blackhawks have announced they will be keeping their nicknames despite their Native American ties.
