Following an internal investigation, Walmart has admitted that a charitable donation that NFL star Khalil Mack’s charity gave to a branch of the store in his hometown around Christmas was not used in an appropriate manner.

In December, Mack’s foundation donated $80,000 to pay off all active holiday layaway accounts at his hometown Walmart in Fort Pierce, Florida.

At the time, a Walmart spokesperson told The Chicago Tribune that the Khalil Mack Foundation‘s donation helped out about 300 to 350 customers.

But, as it turns out, the donation was put to misuse and actually helped out a number of employees as well.

Walmart’s investigation found that, after the Fort Pierce store’s layaways totaled only $60,000, store management gave the remaining $20,000 to some store employees to either split among themselves or pay off their own layaway gifts.

An employee who didn’t get a cut of the $20K alerted Walmart officials, prompting the internal investigation, Fox 32 reported.

“We have determined the store did not handle the transaction in keeping with Walmart’s guidelines and have taken corrective action,” Walmart spokesperson Delia Garcia told Treasure Coast Newspapers.

Garcia did not say how many employees benefitted from the lapse in judgment or if anyone was disciplined or fired.

Hopefully the situation will not dissuade Mack or his foundation, which was created to “positively affect the lives of intercity and under-privileged youth and families by providing for the community, through educational and extra-curricular initiatives,” from making more donations in the future.
