Tim Tebow Will Try Out for Mets in Spring Training, Again

If the former Heisman winner doesn't make the cut, he will begin the year in Triple-A.

If Tim Tebow is going to go on a honeymoon, the engaged MLB player can’t do it this spring.

For the second straight year, the New York Mets have invited the former NFL quarterback to come to spring training and compete for a spot on the team’s major league roster.

During his stint in major-league spring training in 2018, the 31-year-old picked up one hit in 18 at-bats (a .056 average) and had 11 strikeouts and one walk. Not surprisingly given his skills with the stick, Tebow was one of the team’s early cuts.

Before his season in the minors was cut short by a hand injury, Tebow hit .273/.336/.399, with six home runs over 298 plate appearances in Double-A at Binghamton.

If Tebow is going to make it, and stay, in the major leagues, he is going to have to cut down on his strikeouts as he whiffed 103 times in his 298 plate appearances.

However, even if just for marketing purposes, Mets general manager Brodie Van Wagenen made it sound as if Tebow had a good shot of breaking camp with the Mets. If not, he will begin the year in Triple-A.

“Timmy is not a guy you want to put restraints on,” Van Wagenen said in November. “If he sees a block, he’s going to work that much harder to go overcome whatever somebody places on him. I believe in him.”
