If it ain’t broke, don’t stop wearing it.
Winners of seven in a row, the Boston Red Sox will continue to wear their UCLA-ish yellow-and-powder-blue “City Connect” uniforms over the weekend during a pivotal three-game series against the New York Yankees at Fenway Park.
Boston’s winning streak started when the team was in Seattle last week and the team returned home last weekend for a three-game set with the Baltimore Orioles. To acknowledge the start of the final homestand of the season, the Red Sox put on yellow uniforms, which were revealed in April and recognize the Boston Marathon bombing as well as Patriots’ Day; they promptly reeled off three wins in a row to stretch their winning streak to five games. After two more wins over the visiting New York Mets, the Red Sox will continue to wear their alternate jerseys against the Yanks.
“Hey, we’re on a good run,” Xander Bogaerts told reporters after Boston’s first win over the Mets. “As of now, I don’t anticipate us changing them for tomorrow. If we win tomorrow, hopefully we see it the next day also. I know it’s not white and red. I know we’re not the Yellow Sox also, but we need wins right now. So if it’s yellow, it’s yellow.”
It is superstitious? Sure. But if the Red Sox are scared of messing with their winning ways by swapping their yellow jerseys for their traditional colors, let ’em keep wearing what they want — these colors score runs.
Should the Red Sox take two out of three or sweep the three-game series against New York and take a stranglehold on the No. 1 American League Wild Card spot, expect to “City Connect” uniforms in the playoffs for as long as Boston is playing.
With nine games left in their season, the Red Sox (88-65) are in sole possession of the top Wild Card spot and have the Yankees and Blue Jays trailing them. After starting the season 10-11 at Fenway, the Sox are 39-18 in their last 57 home games.
On Friday night at Fenway Park, Gerrit Cole will get the ball for the Yankees and Nathan Eovaldi will toe the rubber for the Sox. For Kyle Schwarber, who was acquired at the trade deadline by Boston and had a pair of home runs on Wednesday, it will be his first taste of the longtime AL East rivalry.
“Yeah, very excited to see what the atmosphere is going to be like,” Schwarber said. “Obviously it’s going to be my first Yankees-Red Sox matchup here in Boston. I’m definitely very excited to show up to the field on Friday and see the buzz. It’s going to be fun. I’m sure it’s going to be electric, and I think we’re all going to be ready for the challenge. We want to be able to keep winning and get to the postseason and keep winning in the postseason. Postseason baseball, it’s addicting. It’s a different kind of baseball. It’s something that you want to get to every single year.”
Even if you have to wear yellow to do it.
