It took a while, but the NFL was finally able to find some musical teammates to join Maroon 5 in playing at the Super Bowl halftime show in Atlanta this February.
One of them, Travis Scott, only accepted the job after consulting with Colin Kaepernick.
According to Variety, the pair “did not necessarily agree” about Scott taking part in the show but they came away “with mutual respect and understanding.”
Before he accepted the gig, Scott also spoke with the NFL and demanded the league make a $500,000 charitable donation to an organization called the Dream Corps that supports social justice initiatives if they wanted him to play.
Scott’s stance is that “everyone makes a statement in their own way” and that “the money going toward Dream Corps, combined with the platform provided by the Super Bowl, will do some good.”
Following the news leaking about Scott accepting the gig, Jay-Z reached out to him to talk him out of it and both rapper Meek Mill and the Al Sharpton ripped into him publicly for it.
Along with Scott, Big Boi of Outkast was also added to the roster of artists joining Maroon 5.
A Change.org petition asking all of them to take a knee during the halftime show is circulating.
