On a Sunday afternoon in Northern Ireland, Shane Lowry emerged victorious in the 148th British Open, held at Royal Portrush. He finished 6 strokes ahead of Tommy Fleetwood, who placed 2nd in the tournament.

Lowry’s stunning victory caps off a fantastic comeback for the Irish golfer. By late in 2017, he had fallen to 93rd on the Official World Golf Ranking. According to a report at Golfweek, Lowry “began 2019 just trying to get back into the world top 50 to get into tournaments like the Open Championship, the other majors and the World Golf Championships.”

Today’s victory stands as a fantastic achievement, and as the culmination of his comeback.

When Sunday began, Lowry had a 4-stroke lead over Fleetwood; this increased to 6 strokes by day’s end.

At Golfweek, Alistair Tait put Lowry’s victory in perspective:

The 32-year-old’s historic win stands out for one very important reason: he did it on home soil. Forget the demarcation between the North and South of this island: the Irish stand as one when it comes to golf. As far as Irish golf fans are concerned, Royal Portrush is an Irish golf course.

Rounding out the top 5 for the Open were Tony Finau in third, with Brooks Koepka and Lee Westwood tied for fourth.

Lowry will take home more than a trophy and the satisfaction of a major victory: according to this CNBC report, his prize winnings will total $1,935,000.
