It’s been over a year since Sebastian Vettel last won a Grand Prix competition. But all of that changed on a night in Singapore: racing for Ferrari, Vettel emerged as the victor in the 2019 Singapore Grand Prix.

Vettel’s Ferrari teammate Charles Leclerc finished second, followed by Red Bull Racing’s Max Verstappen. Rounding out the top five were Mercedes teammates Lewis Hamilton and Valtteri Bottas.

It was a significant race for Ferrari, who chalked up their first one-two of the racing season. The Ferrari team now also holds the distinction of having the first one-two ever at Singapore’s Marina Bay. As for Vettel, it was his fifth victory overall in this particular race.

Formula 1’s official site has the details of Vettel’s victory, which involved some savvy choices in pit stops.

…with Nico Hulkenberg entering their pit window, courtesy of an early pit stop for a puncture after contact with Carlos Sainz, Ferrari opted to box Vettel first to protect him, as he was the most vulnerable. It worked, with the German rejoining just ahead of the Renault.

Vettel had been in third for much of the race, but with fresh tires he surged into the lead — creating some friction between Leclerc and the team’s management.

After the race, Vettel addressed the support he’s received from fans across the globe during his recent lack of good form. He said, “it’s given me so much strength and belief and I tried to put it all into the car and it’s nice when it pays off.” With the Russian Grand Prix happening next weekend, Vettel will soon be able to see if he can maintain his resurgence.
