Following Ohio State’s appearance in the Rose Bowl on New Year’s Day, Urban Meyer will retire from coaching.

Meyer, who was suspended for the start of the season for his handling of abuse allegations against a former assistant coach, has a career record of 186-32 and has coached the Buckeyes to an 82-9 record in seven seasons at the school.

He has also won a trio of national championships.

On Sunday, Meyer talked about coaching the Buckeyes at the Rose Bowl, something he has never done before.

“I dreamt of it,” Meyer said Sunday. “We came close a few times. I know Florida one time I thought we were close to going. Then here in [2014] I thought we were going. There was one other time that I thought we were going, and we didn’t. And no disrespect to the other Bowl games, because they’re awesome, but the Rose is the one we’ve always looked forward to.

In their announcement about Meyer leaving the program, Ohio State did not provide a reason as to why the 54-year-old coach is stepping down but he has previously cited health concerns and does have an arachnoid cyst in his brain that causes severe headaches.

Meyer’s salary is $7.6 million in 2018 and he has about $38 million left on his contract.

Ryan Day, who currently is Ohio State’s offensive coordinator, will take over as the Buckeyes’ head coach starting January 2.
