According to a report from Bleacher Report’s Mike Freeman, a reputable source with more than 100,000 Twitter followers, there is some concern amongst NFL insiders that the league’s season won’t begin on time due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

The virus has already had an effect on the league with the NFL and commissioner Roger Goodell closing team facilities, changing rules in free agency and canceling the physical draft in Las Vegas next month.

Next up, OTAs (rookie minicamps are scheduled to start May 1 and training camps usually begin in mid-July) could potentially be postponed or canceled outright, as Ravens president Dick Cass told the team’s website.

And, although Goodell will likely do everything in his power to make sure it doesn’t happen, there are some that believe a delay to the season is almost inevitable.

“I don’t see how there aren’t massive delays up and down the [NFL] calendar, including delay to start of season,” an AFC coach told Bleacher Report in a text.

An NFC head coach also told the publication that it’s possible the league has a 14-game season in 2020.

At this point, it’s too early to tell what will happen and if a delay or shortening of the season will be necessary.

But, as painful as it might be, it’s probably wise to mentally prepare for the NFL season to start later than usual. That way, if it starts on time, it’ll feel like a win.
