Two seasons ago, Las Vegas head coach Jon Gruden went from an analyst gig in the Monday Night Football booth to leading the Raiders from the sidelines. In a reversal of that transition, ESPN approached a current NFL coach about making the opposite move, according to Andrew Marchand of The New York Post.

ESPN reportedly approached Los Angeles Rams head coach Sean McVay about taking an analyst job on MNF and is convinced the 34-year-old “could be a standout in the booth, somewhat like Jon Gruden.”

McVay, who helped take the Rams to the playoffs in his first season in LA and led the team to the Super Bowl in his second year at the helm before a disappointing third season, didn’t take the job, but it sounds as if it is still on the table should he decide to walk away from coaching.

With McVay staying in Los Angeles for now, ESPN will move forward with Steve Levy, Louis Riddick and Brian Griese as the main broadcast team on Monday nights this season.

McVay already has some TV experience, although not behind a microphone.

HBO’s latest season of Hard Knocks made its debut on the network last night and one of the teams the behind-the-scenes show is focusing on is McVay’s Rams. The other is the Chargers; the teams were selected as they will share a stadium in Los Angeles going forward.
