For the second time already in spring training, the Red Sox have quarantined a prospect from Taiwan over concerns about coronavirus.
After arriving in Florida last week to start his first spring training with Boston, Chih-Jung Liu was placed in quarantine in a hotel room by the team to guard against the virus, according to The Boston Globe.
A Red Sox spokesman told the paper that te team was using “an overabundance of caution” with the young prospect.
Liu, a 20-year-old right-hander, is being delivered three meals a day and keeping in shape by doing some weight training and going for an occasional run.
Feeling fine thus far, Liu is scheduled to join the team Saturday. Once that happens, the team will likely give him an extended book before assigning him to a minor league team.
Earlier this month, the team placed Liu’s countryman, infielder Tzu-Wei Lin, in quarantine due to worries about the virus that is believed to have originated in China.
“I had been here for a week and they said I needed to go back to my apartment,” Lin said. “I was fine. I stayed away for one day and that was it.”
As of Tuesday, the U.S. had 57 confirmed cases of the virus, according to the Centers for Disease Control, 26 more than Taiwan.
