Two teams combined to do something significant during a meaningless mid-September game between clubs that aren’t going to make it to the playoffs.
During San Francisco’s 7-6 win over Boston on Tuesday night, the Giants and Red Sox tied a major league record by combining to use 24 pitchers before a pinch-hit sacrifice fly by Alex Dickerson ended the game in extra innings.
The 15-inning game lasted five hours and 54 minutes and featured 50 players. San Francisco’s pitchers threw 294 pitches compared to Boston’s 253.
Though Tuesday night’s game was close, it would have been a strong candidate for MLB’s mercy rule … were one on the books.
The game was also notable because a Yastrzemski, the grandson of Red Sox legend Carl Yastrzemski, homered at Fenway Park.

Mike Yastrzemski, 29, hit a fastball into the bleachers in centerfield for his 20th home run of the season in the fourth inning. He also played left field, the same position where his grandfather snagged seven Gold Gloves.
“I was just excited being able to do that before friends and family,” Yastrzemski said afterward. “The crowd reactions, all night, were incredible. I can’t thank them enough for being supportive.”
During his 23-year career with the Red Sox, the older Yastrzemski collected 3,419 hits, bashed 452 homers and won the 1967 AL MVP when he captured the Triple Crown.
