Is Lamar Jackson vs. Patrick Mahomes the Next Tom Brady-Peyton Manning Rivalry?
Jackson will lead the undefeated Ravens against Mahomes and the undefeated Chiefs on Sunday
With Peyton Manning retired, Eli Manning benched, Drew Brees and Ben Roethlisberger injured, and 42-year-old Tom Brady winning a battle against time he’ll eventually lose, a changing of the guard at the quarterback position is coming in the NFL.
The NFL had hoped young quarterbacks like Jameis Winston and Marcus Mariota would step up and become the faces of the league, but, due to their lack of skills, that hasn’t happened.
Now, the NFL is looking at an even younger group of quarterbacks to seize the mantle from Brady and Manning’s generation with Lamar Jackson and Patrick Mahomes leading the way.
Facing off Sunday in Kansas City, Jackson will lead the undefeated Ravens against Mahomes and the undefeated Chiefs in a matchup of two of the AFC’s top teams.
“I think just as an NFL fan, as a fantasy owner, if you will, the NFL’s in good hands with these young quarterbacks,” he said. “And I think you’re going to see two great quarterbacks in this game. We might be seeing the next Brady-Manning matchup, Ali-Frazier, Magic-Bird. You don’t know, but the excitement of it … all these quarterbacks that are coming out, they can extend plays.”
Last year, the Chiefs defeated the Ravens 27-24 in overtime in Mahomes and Jackson’s first game against one another.
Whether it reaches peak Brady/Manning levels or not, Sunday’s game at Arrowhead Stadium should be a good one. We like the over.
